VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2002

          Faith FM held its annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) this year from July 9 to 14. This VBS was the fourth one the radio station has sponsored, and definitely the most exciting, both for the children as well as the adults. It was also the most anticipated VBS, due expressly to the presence of Uncle Dan and Aunt Carol from Your Story Hour (YSH). Unfortunately, at the last minute, Aunt Carol was unable to come, but Uncle Dan arrived with his daughter-in-law, Elyse, and his granddaughter, Callie. All the people attending the VBS were blessed by their presence. Each day of the VBS was packed with activities and lessons and stories for the children. It typically began with a special welcome, and a hello to all the children listening who were too far away to attend in person. This was possible because the VBS was broadcast LIVE over the radio every day. Then there was song service, consisting of songs such as “The Banana Song”, “Let Us Come Together”, and “I’ve Got a River of Life”. Always the song service ended with this year’s theme song “Shine Jesus Shine”, which correlated with the VBS theme “Shining for Jesus”. Afterwards, Uncle Dan had prayer and a special story time with the children, sharing important life lessons coupled with gentle humor, as is his way. There was always craft time, where children divided into various age groups and completed the day’s planned craft. The creativity involved in the craft ideas was impressive—children made tortilla holders, pen/pencil holders out of toilet paper rolls for their desks at school, decorated bars of soap, and created hand puppets from paper bags. On several days, there were special visitors that arrived to inform the children about some specific topic. The firefighters appeared one day in their fire truck and arrayed in all their special fire gear. These men taught the children about the dangers of fire and the uses of all their equipment. Also on several days, the children enjoyed what might possibly have been their favorite activity—a puppet show. The show was dedicated to spreading the message of “just saying NO” to drugs and alcohol, despite peer pressure. The puppets were extremely popular, and it would have no doubt been possible to hear a pin drop during the entire show as the children watched and listened in captivated silence. The VBS always ended with prayer, and an opportunity for the children to say hello to family or friends over the air on the radio. On the last day of VBS, a special graduation was held for all the children who had completed the series “Adventures in the Holy Bible”. This is a complete study on the life of Jesus Christ, from His birth to His death and resurrection. The series consists of 52 lessons, each with a quiz at the end that is graded and returned to the person before moving on to the next lesson. There were 70 young people who completed the series, although not all of that number were able to attend the VBS. Their ages ranged anywhere from 2 to 16 years. Uncle Dan brought certificates, YSH pins, and special cassette holders to personally present to each graduate. That last day was undeniably special, and it was anticipated by many children for months in advance. Each day an average of 250 children and adults attended the VBS, although Uncle Dan always asserted that each day it seemed more people were in attendance than the day before. The VBS was a great success this year, and it brought blessings to everyone involved. However, it would not have been possible had it not been for all the wonderful people who volunteered their time and energy to assist in all the different areas of the VBS. Of course, as always, the praise and glory are all the Lord’s, for it is only with His blessing that anything is ever accomplished. Praise God!
